The first necessity will be to determine the area at

present undor cultivation. On the basis of data furnishod principal-

ly by the League of Intions, the Netherlands Government has compiled the following summary of coca cultivation.

The world consumption of cocaine in 1910 has been estimated

at from 13,000 to 15,000 kilograms (15,000 kgs, being approximately equal to 500,000 ounces); in the years following 1910 the consumption would appear to have diminished.

Li Formosa, the cultivation of coca is only in its infancy (the area under cultivation is 201 hectaro's) and in Ceylon it is inconsiderable; the only countries which produce large quantities therefore, are Peru, Bolivia and Java.

If it is correct that Bolivia doce not oxport either coca leaves or raw cocaine and if we disregard the output of Japan and Ceylon, it follows that Peru and Java produce the coua leaves which form the raw ma torial for all the consine mamfactured in the world, In this connection there is an important difference between the two countries; cocaine can be extracted direct; from the South American 000a, Java coca merely yields ocgouin, from which cocaine can be manufactured synthetically. Consequently, Java coca is not used

In Java, where the area under as a sti ulant by the me tives. cultivation in 1922 was about 1400 hectares, the coea leaf is cultivated purely for export, whereas in Peru almost the entire output of the coca loaf (the figures are unknown) is consumed by the people of the country, who chew the logves mixed with chalk, (1) The cultivation of cusa in lungpou, Janičia, danzibar, tho

is purely experimentul and has at present no importance in connection with the question under consideration.
